Problem Identifier Unit Screen//v.w/ RR Template Nitrogen Deficiency

Problem
The oldest leaves--usually the lower leaves--turn yellow and may drop. Yellowing starts at the leaf margins and progresses inward without producing a distinct pattern. The yellowing may progress upward until only the newest leaves remain green. Growth is slow, new leaves are small, and the whole plant may be stunted.

Analysis
Nitrogen is a nutrient that is used by the plant in many ways, including the production of chlorophyll (the green pigment in leaves and stems). Nitrogen is used in large amounts by the plant. When there is not enough nitrogen for the entire plant, it is taken from the older leaves for use in new growth. Nitrogen is easily leached from soil during regular watering. Of all the plant nutrients, it is the one most likely to be lacking in the soil.

Solution
Fertilize houseplants with a balanced fertilizer. Add the fertilizer at regular intervals, as recommended on the label.
